Can it get any worse for the GOP? Now the Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is resigning.

After the election, it seemed as if it were only a question of when, not if. Last night, in my liveblogging at NM FBIHOP, I wrote this:

Richardson is on KUNM now. He was asked what Bush should do about Donald Rumsfeld. "He should fire Rumsfeld."

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, architect of an unpopular war in Iraq, intends to resign after six stormy years at the Pentagon, Republican officials said Wednesday.

Word came a day after the Democratic gains in the election, in which Rumsfeld was a focus of much of the criticism of the Iraq war. Officials said Robert Gates, former head of the CIA, would replace Rumsfeld.

Looks like former CIA director Robert Gates may replace Rummy. And yes, Wikipedia beat me to it. Damn them!
